Fitness For Life Expo (11:30 AM to 1:30 PM)


The Mercy Heart & Vascular Institute will be on hand to share information to enhance event participants knowledge of maintaining good health throughout one's life.  Strong emphasis will be placed on helping particpants learn the risk factors for heart attack and stroke.

Sports Medicine representatives will provide information on bike fitting, cardiopulmonary testing and managing musculoskeletal injuries.

Participants will learn about the many health screenings that Mercy has to offer.

A Mercy Registered Dietician will provide information on healthy diets and managing your diet as you prepare for that next century ride.


FREE Blood Pressure Screenings

FREE Bike Helmets For Kids - The Sacramento Sheriff's Department and Mercy General Hospital are united in promoting bike safety.  Our goal is to eliminate traumatic brain injuries in young children.  The Sacramento Sheriffs Department is hosting a free helmet giveaway for kids 13 years of age or younger.   


FREE Bike Tune Ups - Local bike shops will be available for those minor adjustments or to schedule repairs at the shop.

FREE Trail Maps - County Park Rangers will distribute local and regional trail maps.


 



Mercy Breakaway Challenge (11:30 AM to 1:30 PM)

 The Mercy Breakaway Challenge is a competition for cyclists to demonstrate their sprint and climbing abilities.  Participants interested in competing in the challenge can sign up at the Fitness for Life Expo.  Participation is limited to the first 25 who enter the competition.  Don't Wait - Sign Up Now!!


Each participant will compete in two events.



  • The first event is to spin for 2 minutes on a stationary spin bike.  The event simulates the Sprint stage of the days ride.  Judges will qualify each rider based on their distance traveled  over the 2 minutes.  The winner will be named the Sprint Champion of the Mercy Breakaway Challenge.  A green jersey will be awarded to the winner of this stage.
  • The second event is to spin  for 2 minutes on a stationary bike with a  maximum incline to simulate a Climb stage of the days ride.  Judges will track each riders distance traveled over the 2 minutes.  The winner will be named the King of the Mountain of Mercy's Breakaway Challenge.  A Poka-Dot jersey will be awarded to the winner of this stage.
  • The rider with the best total distance of both stages will be named the Yellow Jersey Overall Winner.  A yellow jersey will be awarded the overall Sprint & Climb champion for the day's competition.
  • The top rider under 18 years of age with the best Sprint & Climb distance pedaled will be named Top Youth Rider.
  • Top Senior Rider (45 & Up) Grey Jersey Winner with the best Sprint & Climb distance pedaled.
  • All winners will be awarded a $100 gift card.
     


Guinness World Record - In December, 2009 the Mercy Cycling Club will hold open try outs for cyclists interested in joining a team that will attempt to break a world record.  We will recruit a group of top cyclists who will pedal on a spin bike over 850 miles in a 24-hour period.   Four cyclists will be selected during the tryouts to attempt the world record in May, 2010 

The top ten cyclists particpating in the Mercy Breakaway Challenge at the Mercy Fall Classic will be invited to compete in December, 2009 for a spot on the Guinness World Record Team.






Lunch (11:00 AM to 1:00 PM)

After the ride, all event participants will enjoy a catered box lunch.  Box lunches will include a sandwich, chips, fruit, and sports drink.  Sandwich choices include:



  • Turkey
  • Roast Beef
  • Chicken
  • Tuna
  • Ham
  • Veggie
